The Legend of Garuda Temple: Where Stories from All Yugas Meet

The GARUDA TEMPLE in Kolar features a striking Garuda idol that holds both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The pooja performed here is believed to help alleviate Sarpadoshas, and the priest provides detailed explanations to ensure all devotees receive darshan. Inside the temple, there is also a statue of Hanuman holding the Brahmastra.

The Garuda deity carries Lord Vishnu in his right hand and Goddess Mahalaxmi in his left, adorned with eight serpents. Devotees believe that performing abhishekam for the deity can relieve them of any of the eight types of Sarpadosham.

STORY BEHIND THE TEMPLE :

Jatayu’s Brave Intervention
In the Ramayana, Jatayu, the King of Birds, witnessed the demon king Ravana abducting Seetha Matha. Despite his old age and weakened body, Jatayu's sense of duty drove him to intervene.
He confronted Ravana, urging him to release Seetha, but Ravana, blinded by arrogance, refused. A fierce battle followed, and though Jatayu fought valiantly, Ravana overpowered him, cutting off his wings and leaving him severely injured.

Jatayu’s Final Act of Devotion
As Jatayu lay wounded, chanting "Rama," Lord Rama and Lakshmana, who were searching for Seetha, heard his faint cries and rushed to his side. In his final moments, Jatayu told them about Seetha's abduction, providing crucial information to Lord Rama. His sacrifice moved Rama deeply, and he honored Jatayu by performing his last rites on the battlefield where he fell.

Rama’s Praise for True Devotion
Lord Rama comforted Jatayu, praising his selfless service and devotion. He emphasized that true devotion lies in the effort, not in the outcome, and despite Jatayu’s physical limitations, his determination to protect Seetha made him victorious in spirit. Jatayu became a symbol of unwavering devotion and courage, showing that service to others is the highest virtue.
The Sacred Temple of Koladevi
In memory of Jatayu’s sacrifice, the people of Koladevi believe a temple was built on the sacred ground where Lord Rama performed Jatayu’s last rites. This temple stands as a lasting tribute to the noble bird’s loyalty and bravery, preserving his legacy for future generations.

The Burning of the Khandava Forest

In the Dwaparayuga, Agni, the god of fire, was weakened after consuming too many yagna offerings. Seeking to regain his strength, he requested the help of Arjuna and Lord Krishna to burn down the medicinal Khandava forest. Agni believed that consuming the herbs and animals of the forest would restore his power. With their divine weapons, Arjuna and Krishna protected the fire while it devoured everything.
The Great Battle Against Indra

As the forest burned, it disturbed Takshaka, the king of snakes, and his allies. Many creatures perished in the fire, and Takshaka’s son, Aswasena, narrowly escaped. Seeing the destruction, Varuna, the god of rain, intervened to save his friend Takshaka’s home, causing a downpour. However, Krishna and Arjuna, armed with divine weapons, held back the rains, allowing Agni to complete his task.

Agni’s Devouring Flame

The fire raged through the forest, scorching everything in its path. Animals ran in panic, some unable to escape. The ponds boiled, killing the fish and tortoises within. Despite Varuna’s repeated efforts to extinguish the flames with rain, the fire consumed the forest, leaving destruction in its wake.

A Divine Blessing

After the destruction, Arjuna felt guilty for the deaths of so many creatures and many snakes were killed and they cursed Arjuna with Sarpa Dosha. This had many ill effects on him in his Life causing him to seek nivarana from the Sarpa Dosha. He was then directed to pray to Lord Garuda to relieve him from this Sarpa Dosha.
Lord Narayana asks Garuda deva to help Arjuna clear the malefic effects of the Sarpa Dosha. Lord Garuda replies that he is not very effective or helpful without Lord Narayana or Goddess Lakshmi. Then, Lord Narayan says that he will be seated on the right of Lord Garuda and Goddess Lakshmi to his left, such that whoever seeks the blessings of Lord Garuda will also be twice blessed by them, with prosperity and abundance. This is also to be found to be stated in the Garuda Purana.

Connection to Koladevi Temple
This sacred event is believed to have taken place near the site of the Koladevi temple, where Garuda is still worshipped as the protector from Sarpadosha.

Another specialty in this temple is that there is also an idol of Lord Anjeneya Swamy. It is unique and not to be found anywhere else in the World as Lord Anjeneya is holding his Brahmastra in this hand. Also, his teeth are visible.

Garuda Temple, Kolar, is located about 17 kilometers from Mulbagal, accessible via Srinivasapura Road. Visitors need to travel a short distance off the main road, which is well-maintained. Numerous flower stalls nearby make the temple easy to find.

BENEFIT OF VISITING GARUDA TEMPLE
Dosha clearance:
Devotees believe that visiting the temple can clear doshas such as
Kalasarpa dosha, Hrudaya dosha, Kanta dosha, Kuja dosha, Bhuja dosha, Rahu sandhi dosha, and Shira dosha

THE FAITH OF THE SPARROW

The Biggest battle on Earth, the battle of Kurukshetra preparation was in full swing.
The grounds were being cleared for the mammoth armies of both sides to arrive.
Trees were being felled and uprooted to clear the path for the large cavalries.
On one such tree lived a mother sparrow with her 4 young ones.

Oblivious to its presence, the soldiers used the elephant to knock down this particular tree too.
The Mother Sparrow's nest fell on the ground along with her just born, with no strength to fly, miraculously were unharmed.
The frightened Mother Sparrow looked at the sky with a prayer for help.
And Lo! its eyes fell on the ever-smiling Lord Krishna on his chariot with Arjuna. The Lord was there to personally examine the battlefield and devise a winning strategy to help the Pandavas win the war.

Mother Sparrow with a renewed hope and spring in her wings, flew to Lord Krishna and fell at his feet.
"Please save my children, O dear Krishna. They will be crushed under the feet of soldiers and the elephants tomorrow when the battle starts" pleaded the crying Mother Sparrow

Lord Krishna, took a deep breath "I understand Mother Sparrow. But I cannot interfere with the Law of time. What has to happen.... will happen"

Mother Sparrow did not budge "Oh Lord, I have come under your shelter and its for me you the Law of the Universe and I surrender myself to you. Please protect my children"

"All right....go and stock food for 3 weeks in your nest" assured the ever protecting Lord Krishna.

The Mother Sparrow did as told and went deep into the nest with her newborn offspring right there in the middle of the Kurukshetra battlefield.

2 days before the mightly battle, Lord Krishna and Arjuna once again came to the battlefield.
Krishna asked Arjuna for his Bow and Arrow.
Shocked Arjuna said "Lord, you have vowed not to live any weapon in the war. Order me, my Lord...whom and where to shoot. I will do it"
Lord Krishna said "Look at that elephant... it's the same one which bought down a tree. It needs to be tamed"
Saying this, the Lord took the bow from Arjuna, aimed at the elephant, and shot the arrow.
The arrow hit the Huge Bell around the neck of the Elephant and the Bell fell on the ground.

Amused Arjuna couldn't hide his chuckle at Krishna missing such an easy aim. "Shall I try?" said Arjuna.
"Not necessary," said Lord Krishna and moved ahead.

The Mightly War started and numerous lives on both sides were lost over the next 18 days.

Post the war, Lord Krishna and Arjuna once again came to the battlefield now completely muddled and full of dead bodies.

Krishna stopped at a certain spot & looked down thoughtfully at an elephant bell.

"Arjuna," he said, "will you lift this bell for me & put it aside?"

The instruction, though simple, made little sense to Arjuna. After all, in the vast field where plenty of other things needed clearing, why would Krishna ask him to move an insignificant piece of metal out of the way? He looked at him questioningly?

"Yes! This bell!" Krishna reiterated. "It's the same bell that had come off the elephant's neck I had shot at."

Arjuna bent down to lift the heavy bell without another question. As soon as he lifted it though, his world changed, forever.

Out flew 1...2...3...4...5 sparrows...
they were the same Mother Sparrow and its 4 offsprings.
Fully protected by the Bell that had fallen from the elephant's neck which Lord Krishna had shot at!

Stunned Arjuna now understood the Lord Krishna's reason for hitting the bell of the elephant.
He prostrated before the Lord and said "Forgive me, O Krishna, Seeing you in the human body & behaving like ordinary mortals, I had forgotten who you really are."

Faith is the heart’s wisdom. It’s what your mind can’t grasp but your heart knows. Give it a place in your life and you’ll fly with a thousand wings. Higher and swifter. Across the seas, beyond the skies.

Have a Safe day! And let this be every day.

Why Annadana is done in Pitru Paksha ?

Why Annadana in Pitru Paksha??

MAHALAYA THARPANA

The story behind it

Mahalaya Paksha is ON and I thought this is the best time to share the story behind why Anna Dana is considered MOST IMPORTANT during this period.

Karna the great warrior after getting killed in the Mahabharata war was received with honors at Heaven by Yama. He said you can enjoy Heaven as you have done great penance in the birth.

Karna was happy and was enjoying the stint. After some time he felt hungry and asked inmates where food is served. Heavenly abodes were taken by shock and informed that in Heaven you don't feel hungry and no food is needed for them.

The deva guru Brihaspathi watching this went into deep meditation and asked Karna to lick his index finger. Karna did the same and hunger was gone. Karna was totally surprised and asked the reason.

Guru explained, "Karna in your birth you were a "giver" and have done all charity to needed. But you were not inclined to Anna Dana which is foremost and that is the reason you felt hungry in Heaven.
Karna asked, "then how the same had gone when I licked my index finger?"

Guru explained

"once a poor Brahmin came and asked food at your house. Since you generally don't do Anna Dhaana you refused but pointed out through your index finger a place where Anna Dhaanam was done. The Brahmin went there and had his food and got his hunger quenched. That 'Punya" was lying in your finger and hence you could feel the hunger had gone from you"!

Karna was in tears.

He ran to Yama and pleaded for mortal form for one Paksha (fortnight). Yama asked him the reason and Karna said he wanted to do only Anna Dhaana in this Paksha.

Yama was moved and granted him the same.

Karna came to Earth and did Anna Dhaana in a place where nobody could identify him. He was so happy that this time was spent for a great cause.

After a fortnight Yama came back and asked Karna to renounce the mortal body. Karna happily agreed.

Yama felt moved by his gesture and said

"anybody would have asked more time to stay on Earth and enjoy pleasures here. But you kept up your words and did exactly for what your mortal body was granted. Please ask a boon which will be granted"

Karna said

"Lord many people on Earth would have forgotten to feed their ancestors or anyone. Therefore if in this Paksha anyone offering food should reach the ancestors or souls who were deprived of offspring to do Karma for them"

Yama happily granted the same and took Karna to Heaven.
Yama said

"anybody offering food in this Paksha is blessed and will also reach those who were not fortunate to be fed in Earth and Heaven"

Therefore please offer food in this Paksha the blessings of which will hold good for 21 generations

Stay blessed

8 AMAZING TALES BEHIND RAKSHA BANDHAN - THE RAKHI FESTIVAL

Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi Festival) is a celebration of the sacred relationship between brother and sister and relationship beyond that too.

There are innumerable stories connected with Rakhi Festival.
We have chosen 8 unknown stories for you.
Do read them and know the significance behind this sacred festival.

Rani Karnavati sending rakhi to Humayan

Rani Karnavati was the queen of Chittor, which had been attacked by Bahadur Shah, Sultan of Gujarat. The queen realized that defending Chittor was getting increasingly difficult for her reached out for protection and help by sending a Rakhi to the Mughal Emperor, Humayun.

On receiving the rakhi, Humayan was overwhelmed. He immediately set out to protect Chittor from the invasion. Alas, he could not reach on time. The Sultan of Gujarat had, by then, reached the queen's fortress. All the women, in the fortress including Rani Karnavati had performed Jauhar (mass suicide) by then.
Humayun, on reaching the fortress, fought with Bahadur Shah and evicted him from the land. The empire was handed over to Rani Karnavati's son, Vikramjeet Singh. Since then, the act of a sister tying a rakhi on the wrist of her brother indicates lifelong protection from him.

2.

LORD INDRA winning battle against Demons

It is not sister alone, in some communities the wife too ties rakhi to her husband.

Like this story of Lord Indra which is mentioned in BHAVISHYA PURAN

Once Lord Indra was defeated by the demons who promptly took control of all the 3 Worlds...Heaven, Earth, and Paatal Lok

Dev Guru Brihaspati advised Lord Indra to do a Yagna & to have a Rakhi tied on his right hand so that he can be undefeated and win the war against the Demon.

Devi Sachi, then tied a rakhi on Indra’s right wrist on the auspicious occasion of Shravan Purnima. Later, she sent him to fight on the battlefield.  The demons fled from the battlefield and Indra emerged victoriously.

The the tradition of tying rakhi has originated from this legend.

This story depicts not only the power of a holy thread but also that it is not restricted to a brother-sister bond.

3.

Lord Krishna promising to protect Draupadi

Once when Lord Krishna was flying a kite, he cut his finger.
Seeing this, Devi Sathyabhama immediately sent for help to get a bandage cloth while Devi Rukmini rushed to bring some clothes herself.

Not wanting to waste a moment, Draupadi, who was nearby,  immediately tore a piece of cloth from her saree and tied it around his finger. Touched by her action, he promised to protect her always. As we all know, he came through with that promise when her Yudhistra lost in gambling in King Dhritrashtra’s court.

4.

Devi Mahalakshmi saves Maha Vishnu

Raja Bali --the grandson of Vishnu's ardent devotee Prahlada-- was made the emperor of the Underworld by Lord Vishnu in his celebrated Vamana Avatar and Maha Vishnu asked Bali for a boon.

Bali being clever asked Vishnu to bless and protect his kingdom forever.

This turn of events led Lord Vishnu to leave Vaikunth Dham and stay in Paatal Lok by disguising himself as the doorman of King Bali

Goddess Lakshmi became restless because of his absence in Vaikuntha (their abode). She came to earth in the guise of a Brahmin woman and told Bali, the story of her husband has gone away for some work, due to which she requested shelter from the King. Bali not only gave her a place to stay but also took care of her.

Soon due to presence of Devi Mahalakshmi (goddess of Wealth) and Lord Vishnu himself, the Paatal Lok became prosperous and the natives staying there had a great charming life.

King Bali too became highly reliant on his newfound sister Devi Mahalakshmi for her amazing skills on Wealth.

On the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shravana month, Devi Mahalakshmi tied a thread around Bali's wrist with prayers for his protection and happiness. Touched by her affection, Bali granted her a wish. She requested him to free her husband, the gatekeeper. The incident had Bali confused as he couldn't envision the lady as the doorman's wife. It's then that both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi revealed their true selves to the King,
The shocked, surprised King Bali immediately requested Maha Vishnu to return with the Goddess to Vaikuntha.

5.

Santoshi Maa’s Birth

On seeing Lord Ganesha celebrate Rakhi with his sister, his sons Shubh and Labh started insisting upon a sister, leading to the creation of Santoshi Maa, from the flames that emerged from his consorts, Riddhi and Siddhi.

6.

Alexander the Great's wife Roxana and King Porus

Legend has it that during Alexander the Great's invasion of India in 326 BCE, his wife Roxana sent a sacred thread to Porus, requesting him not to harm her husband in battle.

Once when Alexander did fall in front of Porus and Porus has a chance to kill him but he acknowledged the importance of Rakhi and refrained from killing Alexander, as the Rakhi thread on his wrist was a constant reminder of his promise to Roxana

7.

Lord Yama and sister Yamuna

Lord Yama was cursed Devi Chhaya to die.

Now. During Vedic times almost everyone was considered immortal so the curse of death terrified Yama.

Sister  Yamuna immediately tied a RAKSHA SUTRA around her brother Yama's wrist and thus Lord Yama was saved.

Lord Yamaraja who was later declared as the God of Death announced that every brother who promises to protect his sister on Raksha Bandhan will stay immortal.

8.

Devi Parvati’s marriage to Lord Shiva

Parvati grew up with the hope of marrying Shiva, but Shiva refused to accept her as his consort due to the loss of his love Sati. Parvati took to severe austerities to purify her senses, activate her chakras so that she could become eligible to marry the Lord. To help her reach her goal, Lord Vishnu asked her to tie a Rakhi on his wrist, so that as her brother he could remove all obstacles coming her way. Legend has it, that for Shiva and Parvati’s celestial marriage, Lord Vishnu performed all the ceremonies that are supposed to be done by the bride’s brother and glow up this favorable ceremonial day.

Raksha Bandhan Mantra

Following is the mantra in Sanskrit that is chanted while tying rakhi on the brother's wrist.

येन भादो बली राजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः |

तेन त्वानामिभाद्नामी त्वामाभिबध्नामी रक्षे माचल माचल ||

Meaning – "I am tying this Raksha Bandhan to you that was tied to the Demon King Bali. Oh rakshaa please do not move and waver."

Sibling rivalry is always much-loved and much-talked-about. It’s only fair that you invest in the secure future of your lovable sister and safeguard her financial position in her best interest today

Wishing you all a very Happy Raksha Bandhan

Dedicated to dear sister Lakshmi Vanjre

STORY ABOUT WHY SUN GOD GIFTED UMBRELLA AND PADUKA TO HUMANS

One of the Saptarishi is Sage Jamadagi (father of 6th Incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Parusharama)

In Mahabharata (Anushasana Parva) there is an unusual story which is being shared here.

Rishi Jamadagni was a great Archer and loved to practice regularly

His wife, Devi Renuka who used to run like a Hare would be equally fast in bringing back those arrows and hand over them to the Rishi again.

Once in the noon heat of Jyestha Masa, Rishi Jamadagni as usual, was practicing again and kept shooting the arrows.

As usual, Devi Renuka would run and bring the arrows.

Suddenly, he noticed that his beloved Devi Renuka was limping.

The Surprised Rishi asked “Devi, why are you limping” ?

Devi Renuka said, “The Sun is burning like a furnace, my head is aching and my feet are burning due to that heat produced by the Sun rays”.

Seeing this, Rishi Jamadagni became furious at the Sun God and immediately took aim at the Sun.

Sensing trouble, Sun God immediately appeared before the Rishi in the form of a Brahmana and

Seeing a Brahmana, Rishi Jamadagni immediately lowered his bow and welcomed the Guest.

When the Brahmana asked the Rishi, “at whom are you aiming your arrow and why”…. The Sage explained everything.

At this, the Sun  God in the guise of Brahmana laughed and said “O Great Rishi….. The Sun is always is in Motion. At mid-day, the Rays of the sun will be at its peak of strength. This is his Karma and he is bound to do this. Stopping the Sun from doing his duty will bring the World to a standstill”.

Seeing sense, Rishi Jamadagni said “O wise Brahmana Devta, then you tell me the solution to this”.

Noticing that the Rishi’s anger had cooled, Sun God immediately revealed his true form.

Sun God as a remedy to this, immediately presented an Umbrella and a pair of Sandals for protection from the heat of the Sun Rays. Sun God says “O Great Rishi, henceforth, the gift of an umbrella and a pair of Sandals in all religious rites shall be established as meritorious”.

By giving old people these umbrellas and footwear one would get Punya (merit). For this reason in the rites for the departed these articles are given. The forefathers would be pleased. This tradition has come down to us from Jamadagni and the Sun God. In ancient times humans had to get drenched

MORAL :
If Someone is getting troubled even if you are doing your duty, you are better off giving them the solution to overcome the trouble.

And when you have protection from the below and protection from the above, you can truly concentrate.

Jamadagni Rishi Temple is located in Peej, Kullu (near Manali) in HIMACHAL

HANUMAN ji MEETS LORD KRISHNA !!!

There are many stories that connect Ramayana with the Mahabharatha.
One of the lesser known stories is the one where Lord Hanuman meets Lord Krishna !

THE STORY :

Once it so happened that Arjuna goes to Rameshwaram to perform ritual for the deceased.
Post the pooja, he goes to see the Bridge built by Vanaras to cross the Great Sea to reach Lanka.
Seeing the bridge, Arjuna loudly wonders "If Lord Rama was the Best Archer, why didnt he build this Bridge with his Arrows, why did he take the help of Vanaras" ?

Seeing this....Lord Hanuman comes in the form of a Vanara and tells Arjuna "Hey Arjun, Vanaras were very strong and the arrows would not have held the weight of those Vanaras, hence Lord Rama built the bridge with these stones"
Arjuna arrongantly  remarked "No....If Lord Rama was the best Archer....he should have built it with arrows. If I had a chance, I would have built a bridge of Arrows, more stronger and even faster">

Lord Hanuman, unhappy, challenges Arjuna that if indeed Arjuna could build a bridge that withstands his weight, let alone the army of Vanaras, he (Lord Hanuman) would be ready to on the flag of Arjuna's chariot.
But, if Arjuna fails, then Arjuna should give up his life by entering a pyre.

Arjuna immediately builds the bridge in a jiffy with his Arrows.  But, when Hanuman stepped on the bridge, the whole bridge collapsed !
Shocked and Crestfallen, Arjuna decides to end his life.

At this moment, Lord Krishna appears as a old man and stops him and asks "Wait, Dhanurdhar.....was there any witness to your challenge? No...then rebuild the bridge again and I will be witness, if you fail again...then you can indeed enter the pyre"

Having been humbled earlier, this time Arjuna remembers his friend, guide, philospher LORD KRISHNA and starts shooting the Arrows.

The bridge indeed looked stronger than before and Arjuna asks Hanuman to walk over it.

Despite his best efforts, Hanuman is not able to break the bridge.

Not able to understand, Hanuman again walks on the bridge......and while walking happens to look below the bridge....and lo! what he sees.
A GAINT TORTOISE IS HOLDING THE BRIDGE.

Hanuman instantly understand that all this is the Leela of the Lord.

Hanuman instantly recognises that Lord Krishna is indeed his own beloved Lord Rama and is overcome with emotion.
Both Arjuna and Hanuman fall at the feet of Lord Krishna and seek his blessings.

Add caption

Hanuman then promises aid to Arjuna by being on the flag of his chariot, thus stabilising and protecting it.

Hanuman's flag signifies the CONTROL OF SENSES AND CONTROL OF MIND which gives victory over the lower nature.

This story teaches us that

WE SHOULD ALWAYS REMEMBER OUR GURU/MENTOR AND THE LORD WHILE DOING ANYTHING AND WE WILL NEVER FAIL.

STORY OF RISHI MANDAVYA

Mandavya was a Brahmin who gave away his vast wealth and went away to Himalayas to become an Ascetic and came to be known as Rishi Mandavya.

Once Rishi Mandavya was deep in penance at his Ashram and was under a vow of Silence.
A gang of robbers, running away from soldiers, found the Rishi’s hermitage to be ideal place to hide, hid their loot & themselves in his humble hermitage.
The King’s soldiers who came searching asked the Sage about the whereabouts of the robbers.
The Sage, being under a vow of silence did not answer and continued with his penance.
The soldiers repeated the question several times, but the sage did not answer.
The Soldiers went inside the hermitage and found both the loot and the thieves.
Mistakenly they arrested the Rishi too as they believed that he was helping the robbers by being silent when asked about the thieves.

THE PUNISHMENT :
The Angry King ordered SHOOLA DANDA on them, including the Rishi (as he believed the Sage to be the robbers associate)…..meaning trusting them with a Spear and thus killing them.
The rishi Mandavya, in spite of being pierced and without food, though his yogic powers and ascetic merit was alive and continued with his penance.

The great sage continued with is penance.
Many sages, in the guise of birds visited rishi and expressed their sorrow and unhappiness, Mandavya but the great sage consoled them saying “
No one is responsible for my suffering. I think its all due to my past Karma” and continued with his penance.

The people in and around were surprised to see the great sage surviving the pain of the trident and still pursuing the penance. For anybody’s query he used to reply that no one was responsible for his suffering.

A few days later the king came to know through his soldiers that the sage was surviving the heavy odds. The king rushed to the spot and ensured the sage was safely grounded from the trident. The King himself tried to remove the trident but in vain. Then they cut off the trident but the upper pointed edge was struck to the Sage’s body. The king profusely apologized and begged for forgiveness.
The sage pardoned the King saying “You are not to be blamed Rajan...”  and began wandering with the trident edge and kept his penance continuously. He was famously called and eulogized by all as ‘Ani Mandavya’ (Mandavya with trident).

THE CURSE TO LORD YAMA :
The sage was not angry with the King but was definitely surprised as to why he, such a Dharmic person was punished “As far as I remember, I havent done any crime. So, why did the Lord Punish me this way”.  These questions kept bothering the Sage.
So, the great Sage Mandvya met the God of Dharma, Lord Yama and asked
Hey DharamaRaja, Lord Yama, be kind enough to let me know the reason, I had to go through such a harsh punishment. I did not commit any heinous crime, atleast in this janma. And I would like to know from your records, if I did anything in my previous janma, and if it was my prarabda karma. “

The Lord of Death replied, ‘
When you were in your childhood you had inserted the sharp darbha (kusa grass in Sanskrit) grass into the tails of insects. Just as a small gift to someone increases religious merit manifold, a small sin will also multiply manifold and served to the same person.  Hence, I have imposed this punishment upon you
The shocked and surprised saged asked…”I never remember hurting anyone, even an insect. When was this”?  Lord Yama replied “when you were a child”.

Mandavya was furious and disagreed with the logic and reasoning of the God of Dharma.
He argued “Even the  scriptures does not consider any sinful act committed upto the age of 12 as punishable and you being, Lord of Dharma, have committed injustice and meted out punishment which is disappropriate to the act. The law, after all, should be ethical and amenable to reason. Any unrighteous act (adharma) committed during the ignorant childhood age should not attract punishment.” Saying this, the Sage cursed the God of Dharma to born on to a Slave Woman.
And then with his power of tapas, he ordained that ‘no child below 14 shall attract sin for its done in innocence without knowing consequences'

Later on the God of Dharma was born as Vidura, brother of Dhritarashtra and Pandu Maharaja.

LEARNINGS :
1. Pain is to the body and not to the soul.
2. Mistakes done unknowingly should be pardoned.
3. Never punish someone without doing proper analysis and investigation.

TEMPLES ASSOCITED WITH THE GREAT RISHI MANDAVYA:

Mandya
in Karnataka owes its name to Rishi Mandavya. The Great sage did his penance here.
Once King Indravarma (1001A.D.) who did not have any children asked Mandavya Rishi for guidance, the sage advised him to build a temple for Sri Janardhana Swamy and Lakshmi devi. The King soon had a baby boy.
The Temple is very famous today as SRI LAXMI JANARDHANA TEMPLE.

Couples who don’t have children come here and pray for a child and they do get blessed with progeny.

Hence the Lord is also called as MAKKALA JANARDHANA.

Mandavya Rishi taught Veda to even all the Wild Animals around him. Hence, the forest in which he did his penance is called VEDARANYA (FOREST OF THE VEDAS). The area around Mandya was earlier known as Vedaranya.

VASANTA VALLABHRAYA TEMPLE in Bangalore was built by Mandavya Rishi.
The temple is more than a thousand years old. The legend (sthalapurana) associated with the temple is that it was established (pratishtha) by the sage Mandavya.

Once upon a time, the disciples of Mandavya found him missing from his ashrama. Mandavya settled down in Vasantapura, meditating. It is also believed that if someone unable to go to Tirupati visits the Vasantapura temple, they get an equivalent amount of benefit (punya) from the visit.

The Shiva Linga inside  Someshwara swamy temple in Ulsoor, Bangalore was also worshipped by Mandvaya Rishi.

The Main Deity in the RANGANATHA SWAMY TEMPLE in MAGADI as also installed by Mandavya Rishi.
