The Story of Shabari — The Devotee Who Tasted Heaven Before the Lord Did

Long ago, in a quiet village, there lived a young woman named Shabari, the daughter of a hunter. She wasn’t born into privilege or beauty, but her heart shone with a rare, divine purity.

On the morning of her wedding, she saw thousands of goats and sheep tied up — ready to be sacrificed as part of the ritual. Her tender heart trembled. How can I celebrate while these innocent lives are lost?” she thought.
Before dawn broke, she fled to avoid the wedding and save those goats, sheep from getting scarified.

She wandered from one sage to another, begging to be taught the secret of true wisdom — Brahma Jnana. But each teacher turned her away. You are of low birth,” they said. You are unfit.”
Only Sage Matanga, a true seer, looked beyond her appearance and saw the gold in her soul. He welcomed her with compassion into his ashram. The other sages mocked him — “
He has accepted an outcaste!
But Sage Matanga smiled and said,
“She has come seeking the Highest. How can I refuse her?”

Under his care, Shabari bloomed — humble, silent, devoted. She swept the ashram, tended the cows, fetched water, and served every visitor with folded hands. Her only joy was seva — service born of love.

Years passed. When Sage Matanga grew old, he called her close. My child,” he said softly, I will soon leave this body. Is there anything you wish?”
Tears filled her eyes. Shabari pleaded, “Gurudev, take me with you. I cannot live without you.”
But the sage smiled. “Not yet. The Lord Himself — Sri Rama — will come here one day. Wait for Him. After His darshan, you will reach me again - until then stay alive,”

So Shabari waited.
Every morning, she would gather fresh berries, clean her hut, and decorate it with flowers — whispering,
“Maybe today my Lord will come.”

Days turned into months, months into years. Her hair turned grey, her back bent, but her hope never faded.

One day, a rishi at the nearby Pampa Sarovar saw her drawing water. Disgusted by her caste, he hurled a stone at her. It struck her leg, and a drop of blood fell into the lake — turning the entire lake red like blood!
The horrified sages tried every mantra, every ritual, but nothing could cleanse it. They even brought water from Ganga, it was of no use, they brought Yamuna water, it didn’t work. The water remained Red.

Desperate, they prayed to Lord Rama, who was then wandering through the forest with Lakshmana.

When Rama arrived, He walked into the red waters — but the lake remained blood. He took a sip, even washed His mouth, yet nothing changed.
Puzzled, He asked,
“How did this happen?”
The rishis told Him the story of Shabari — the outcaste woman whose blood had “polluted” the lake.

The moment Rama heard her name, His eyes softened, and His voice trembled —
Oh rishis… that was not her blood. That was my own. Her pain is mine. Her devotion flows in my veins.”

He asked them to bring her at once. One of them went to Shabari and said, "Lord Rama has come and he is requesting you".
Shabari came running — limping, trembling, tears streaming down her face — the soil from her feet fell into the water as she was running hastily. Instantly, the water turned crystal clear again!
Everyone was surprised and were asking themselves
"What happened? what happened?".

The rishis stood speechless. Rama smiled, “You see? The dust of a pure devotee has done what even my touch could not.”
Shabari prayed to Lord Rama
"now, please come to my hut Lord, I have decorated it with flowers for you, I have brought sweet berries for you. Please come my Lord".

He gently took Shabari’s hands and said, Come, Mother. Take me to your home.”
Her heart overflowed with joy. She led Rama and Lakshmana to her simple hut, adorned with flowers and love.

Offering Him a bowl of berries she had picked that morning, she said, “"Lord I have selected only the sweet berries for you, I tasted every berry to make sure I have only brought the sweetest berries, please take it my Lord".

When Rama was about to take a berry Lakshman said, "Brother these are half eaten!".

But Rama smiled and took one.
Brother,” He said as He tasted it,
“no fruit in this world is as sweet as this.”

Then He turned to Shabari, Whoever offers Me a fruit, a leaf, or even water — if it is offered with love — I accept it with joy.”

Shabari then humbly suggested, “My Lord, seek out Sugreeva — the king of the Vanaras. He will aid you in your quest to find Sita.”
She added softly, “My revered guru had foretold this moment. He told me that Sugreeva would be the key to your mission — and that I would live to witness your divine purpose on earth.”

LORD RAMA  Rama explained to Shabari the Navadha Bhakti — the nine paths of devotion that lead one closer to God. He told her that even sincerely following one of these paths can earn His deepest grace.

The nine forms are:

  1. Satsang: Keeping company with the righteous and the devoted.

  2. Listening to divine stories: Finding joy in hearing the Lord’s leelas.

  3. Serving the Guru: Offering humble service to one’s spiritual teacher.

  4. Singing His glories: Praising the Lord with a pure heart.

  5. Chanting His name: Repeating His name with unwavering faith.

  6. Self-control and righteous living: Living with discipline and dharma.

  7. Seeing the divine in all: Recognizing God in every being.

  8. Contentment and non-criticism: Staying content and avoiding fault-finding.

  9. Total surrender: Offering oneself completely at the Lord’s feet.

Rama blessed her, Ask what you wish.”
With folded hands, Shabari said, My only wish, my Lord, is to love You forever — nothing else.”

Rama’s eyes glistened. He raised His hand in blessing.
Moments later, as her Lord stood before her, Shabari’s soul left her body — merging into eternal peace, her Guru’s promise fulfilled.

It is not what we do or offer to the Lord, how big or small things and projects we do. What matter is with how much devotion we offer it to Lord Rama! The Lord values bhava (feeling) over bhoga (offering)

Shabari’s Cave is near Pampa Sarovar in Hampi is the place where Shabari lived and perform her Tapasya (austerities). There is actual spot where Lord Ramacandra and Laxmana came and sat and partook Ber (berries) picked by her.

Purohit Ravana helping LORD RAMACHANDRA

A Lesser Known Story From The Ramayana

In Search of Sita, Lord Ramachandra, Lakshman, Hanuman and the army of Vanaras reached Rameshwaram and now only the vast expanse of the water was separating them from reaching Sri Lanka.

It was decided to build a bridge over the Vast Sea.

But before that, it was considered necessary to take the blessings of Bhagwan Shiva

In the true Sanathan Dharma tradition, Lord Ramachandra desired to worship Bhagwan Shiva and seek his blessings to defeat Ravanaa and bring back Sita Mata.

All the arrangements were made for the grand Pooja but 1 hurdle came up.
A suitable Purohit (Priest) who would conduct the Yagna was missing and everyone was in dilemma.

Only a Brahmin who had never missed his Puja Schedule was allowed to perform this particular Yagna.

After discussing with Vibhishana,  Lord Ramachandra concluded the best person to do this great Yagna was none other than the Lanka King Ravana himself and sent Hanuman to respectfully invite Raavan himself to do the Yaghnaa !!

The Vanaras, Lakshman and everyone around were shocked at this invite.

They wondered, how can Ravana accept an invite by an enemy to conduct specifically meant to conquer and destroy him !

But Hanuman, being a loyal soldier implicitly obeyed and flew to request to invite him.

True to his stature as a renowned scholar and an ardent devotee of Bhagwan Shiv, Ravana immediately accepted the invitation.

It was considered a pride for any Purohit to be a part of yagna for Lord Shiva

In fact Ravanaa was overjoyed in heart and knew that his end was near and so was the fact that they can attain the road to Vaikuntha-Loka with just one more life away.

Ravana came to the Yagna site and after inspecting all the arrangements turned to Lord Ramachandra and said

“ O Ayodhya Prince, while all satisfactory arrangements have been done, but sadly no Yagna is complete without the presence of wife. Since you do not have your wife with you, Yagna cannot be conducted”

Lord Ramachandra calmly smiled and said

“O Great Scholar, We have invited to have a flawless Yagna and since you have identified the flaw, we request you to provide a solution and solve the issue”

The entire assembly of Vanaras, Lakshman, Hanuman and others were filled with curiosity to see Ravana’s reaction

Ravana said

“O Ramachandra, I have come here as a Scholar and I do not wish to bear the blame for the non-conduct of the Yagna of my beloved Lord Shiva, I shall bring Sita here for the Pooja”

All around were astounded and stood speechless at the remarkable exchange of words of the two.

Ravana brought Sita Mata from Lanka to the Yagna site and conducted the divine Yagna of Lord Shiva.

After the great Pooja, both the divine couple, Lord Ramachandra and Sita Mata prostrated before the scholar Ravana. Seeing the MADE FOR EACH OTHER COUPLE, Ravana blessed Lord Ramachandra

“LET VICTORY BE YOURS” !!!!

These words meant Ravana’s own destruction but here the values of scholarly dharma surpassed everything.

The final formality of honoring the Purohit remained, and Lord Ramachandra requested Ravana to suggest his fees.

Ravanaa, the king would not take any fees, not even from Sri Ramachandra, as he was always at the giving, and not the receiving end of fees or favors. But again, the Vedic pundit in him came to the fore.

He said,

"Sri Ramachandra, knowing you very well, the only fees I solicit is that you stand by me when my life departs".

And thus, it came to pass, that when Ravanaa lay in his last moments Sri Ramachandra was near him. It only reveals that ultimate comfort for everyone high or low is to have Divinity nearby at the moment of death.

STORY ON WHY SHAMMI (BANNI) LEAVES EXCHANGED ON VIJAYA DASHAMI Day 10 of Dasara Festival

This is the story of KAUTSA MUNI.

When he was a young boy, KAUTSA MUNI of Paithan was sent to RISHI VARTANTU (Baruach)

for higher education.

KAUTSA being a brilliant student soon learnt all the 14 Vidyas from RISHI VARTANTU and became expert in all the sciences.

On completion of his education, KAUTSA, now a MUNI…..KAUTSA MUNI expressed his desire to give his RISHI VARTANTU, his guru, GURU DAKSHINA.

RISHI VARTANTU was having none of it and rejected the offering saying “You learnt all the vidyas with utmost faith, implement them, that itself will be my GURU DAKSHINA

RISHI VARTANTU knew that KAUTSA MUNI was from an extremely poor background, and hence rejected the Guru Dakshina

But, KAUTSA MUNI was adamant on giving Guru Dakshina as he felt that otherwise the knowledge he learnt will not bear any fruit.

On seeing his disciple’s insistence, RISHI VARTANTU deliberately asked KAUTSA MUNI to bring 14 CRORES of GOLD COINS (1 CRORE for each of the 14 Vidyas) with the condition that all the coins must be from the SAME PLACE.

KAUTSA MUNI was stumped and did not have a clue how to get such a huge number of GOLD COINS that too from a single place.

MEETING KING RAGHU

After meeting many learned persons, he was guided to meet KING RAGHU of Ayodhya (LORD RAMA’s ancestor), who they advised, would get him his desired 14 crore GOLD COINS.

KING RAGHU was the ancestor of Lord Rama. KING RAGHU was famous for his generosity. (It was because of his generosity and other deeds that Lord Rama’s vamsha is known as RAGHU KUL/ RAGHU VAMSHA)

KING RAGHU welcomed KAUTSA MUNI warmly and washed his feet with water filled in CLAY POT.

“ Oh…..its a Clay Pot and not a Gold Pot !” wondered KAUTSA MUNI

Seeing this, KAUTSA heart sank and with heavy heart and no hope, hesitantly informs KING RAGHU “Rajan, I had come here to ask you for 14 CRORES of GOLD COINS to pay GURU DAKSHINA to RISHI VARTANTU, but seeing that you don’t even have a GOLD POT to wash a Rishi’s feet, I better move

KING RAGHU, on advise of his Guru Vashishta had performed VISWAJIT YAGNA and had given away everything he had as DHANA (Offering). Hence, King Raghu’s treasury was completely Bare and Empty.
But, King Raghu didn’t
want a Brahmin to leave empty handed. He requested 2 days’ time from KAUTSA to arrange for the GOLD COINS & begged the Muni to stay back.

Now in deep dilemma, King Raghu was stuck in deep thought.
He finally decided the only recourse left for him to get that 14 crore Gold Coins in 1 single day is to get it from the King of Wealth, KUBERA.
He decided to attack Kubera and get the required Gold Coins.

Accordingly, on advise of KAUTSA MUNI, the King RAGHU decided that the war would be fought on SHUDH NAVAMI of Ashwin Masa (9th day of Dasara).

KUBERA got to know of this plans of Kind Raghu and realizing the strength and bravery of KING RAGHU personally came down to earth, and told KING RAGHU “Rajan , I understand your requirements and the noble cause as to why you are seeking those Gold Coins and hence towards that, I have turned all the leaves of the SHAMMI tree (BANNI tree) on the outskirts of AYADHYA into GOLD COINS. Take as many as you want”.

KING RAGHU was thrilled and promptly handed over all the Gold coins to KAUTSA MUNI.

KAUTSA MUNI collected the required 14 crore Gold Coins and  offered all the GOLD COINS at the feet of his guru RISHI VARTANTU.

RISHI VARTANTU however, found that KAUTSA had bought far more extra GOLD COINS than the 14 CRORE asked for.

He returned all the extra coins to KAUTSA MUNI.

In turn, KAUTSA MUNI decided not to keep anything for himself and returned all the extra coins to KING RAGHU.

KING RAGHU felt it is against Dharma to take back what has been given in Dhana (charity) and hence he kept all the returned Gold Coins below the same SHAMMI TREE on the outskirts of AYODHYA.

The people of AYODHYA after the VIJAYA DASHMI pooja went to this SHAMMI tree, worshipped it and exchanged GOLD COINS amongst themselves.

The tradition continues to this day.

People on the VIJAYA DASHAMI day worship the SHAMMI tree and exchange the leaves of the tree symbolizing the exchange of GOLD COINS and express happiness.

 AMAZING FACT :

Shami tree or its leaves are not easily found. A Shami tree about 1000 years old is present in the city of Bhuj, Kutch district of Gujarat. This tree is also mentioned in the 'Kusumlata' chapter of the book 'Brihatsamhita' by the famous Jyotishacharya Varahamihira during the period of the great king Vikramaditya. It is also known as 'Khizde' or Khizda.

Day 10

HIDDEN MEANING :
1. Share what you have.

Exchange leaves, hearts and be happy.

King Raghu had become virtually penniless after VISHWAJIT YAGNA but even then he did not keep anything for himself but kept the GOLD COINS returned by KAUTSA MUNI back below the SHAMMI TREE as he felt it was not rightfully his wealth.

2. King Raghu ready to fight Kuber shows that you should be ready to fight for a GOOD CAUSE even against the mighty

3. Lord Kuber turning Shammi Leaves into Gold Coins again for a Good Cause shows that you should be ready to SHARE if the intention is the right one.

HANUMAN ji MEETS LORD KRISHNA !!!

There are many stories that connect Ramayana with the Mahabharatha.
One of the lesser known stories is the one where Lord Hanuman meets Lord Krishna !

THE STORY :

Once it so happened that Arjuna goes to Rameshwaram to perform ritual for the deceased.
Post the pooja, he goes to see the Bridge built by Vanaras to cross the Great Sea to reach Lanka.
Seeing the bridge, Arjuna loudly wonders "If Lord Rama was the Best Archer, why didnt he build this Bridge with his Arrows, why did he take the help of Vanaras" ?

Seeing this....Lord Hanuman comes in the form of a Vanara and tells Arjuna "Hey Arjun, Vanaras were very strong and the arrows would not have held the weight of those Vanaras, hence Lord Rama built the bridge with these stones"
Arjuna arrongantly  remarked "No....If Lord Rama was the best Archer....he should have built it with arrows. If I had a chance, I would have built a bridge of Arrows, more stronger and even faster">

Lord Hanuman, unhappy, challenges Arjuna that if indeed Arjuna could build a bridge that withstands his weight, let alone the army of Vanaras, he (Lord Hanuman) would be ready to on the flag of Arjuna's chariot.
But, if Arjuna fails, then Arjuna should give up his life by entering a pyre.

Arjuna immediately builds the bridge in a jiffy with his Arrows.  But, when Hanuman stepped on the bridge, the whole bridge collapsed !
Shocked and Crestfallen, Arjuna decides to end his life.

At this moment, Lord Krishna appears as a old man and stops him and asks "Wait, Dhanurdhar.....was there any witness to your challenge? No...then rebuild the bridge again and I will be witness, if you fail again...then you can indeed enter the pyre"

Having been humbled earlier, this time Arjuna remembers his friend, guide, philospher LORD KRISHNA and starts shooting the Arrows.

The bridge indeed looked stronger than before and Arjuna asks Hanuman to walk over it.

Despite his best efforts, Hanuman is not able to break the bridge.

Not able to understand, Hanuman again walks on the bridge......and while walking happens to look below the bridge....and lo! what he sees.
A GAINT TORTOISE IS HOLDING THE BRIDGE.

Hanuman instantly understand that all this is the Leela of the Lord.

Hanuman instantly recognises that Lord Krishna is indeed his own beloved Lord Rama and is overcome with emotion.
Both Arjuna and Hanuman fall at the feet of Lord Krishna and seek his blessings.

Add caption

Hanuman then promises aid to Arjuna by being on the flag of his chariot, thus stabilising and protecting it.

Hanuman's flag signifies the CONTROL OF SENSES AND CONTROL OF MIND which gives victory over the lower nature.

This story teaches us that

WE SHOULD ALWAYS REMEMBER OUR GURU/MENTOR AND THE LORD WHILE DOING ANYTHING AND WE WILL NEVER FAIL.
