The Legend of Garuda Temple: Where Stories from All Yugas Meet

The GARUDA TEMPLE in Kolar features a striking Garuda idol that holds both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The pooja performed here is believed to help alleviate Sarpadoshas, and the priest provides detailed explanations to ensure all devotees receive darshan. Inside the temple, there is also a statue of Hanuman holding the Brahmastra.

The Garuda deity carries Lord Vishnu in his right hand and Goddess Mahalaxmi in his left, adorned with eight serpents. Devotees believe that performing abhishekam for the deity can relieve them of any of the eight types of Sarpadosham.

STORY BEHIND THE TEMPLE :

Jatayu’s Brave Intervention
In the Ramayana, Jatayu, the King of Birds, witnessed the demon king Ravana abducting Seetha Matha. Despite his old age and weakened body, Jatayu's sense of duty drove him to intervene.
He confronted Ravana, urging him to release Seetha, but Ravana, blinded by arrogance, refused. A fierce battle followed, and though Jatayu fought valiantly, Ravana overpowered him, cutting off his wings and leaving him severely injured.

Jatayu’s Final Act of Devotion
As Jatayu lay wounded, chanting "Rama," Lord Rama and Lakshmana, who were searching for Seetha, heard his faint cries and rushed to his side. In his final moments, Jatayu told them about Seetha's abduction, providing crucial information to Lord Rama. His sacrifice moved Rama deeply, and he honored Jatayu by performing his last rites on the battlefield where he fell.

Rama’s Praise for True Devotion
Lord Rama comforted Jatayu, praising his selfless service and devotion. He emphasized that true devotion lies in the effort, not in the outcome, and despite Jatayu’s physical limitations, his determination to protect Seetha made him victorious in spirit. Jatayu became a symbol of unwavering devotion and courage, showing that service to others is the highest virtue.
The Sacred Temple of Koladevi
In memory of Jatayu’s sacrifice, the people of Koladevi believe a temple was built on the sacred ground where Lord Rama performed Jatayu’s last rites. This temple stands as a lasting tribute to the noble bird’s loyalty and bravery, preserving his legacy for future generations.

The Burning of the Khandava Forest

In the Dwaparayuga, Agni, the god of fire, was weakened after consuming too many yagna offerings. Seeking to regain his strength, he requested the help of Arjuna and Lord Krishna to burn down the medicinal Khandava forest. Agni believed that consuming the herbs and animals of the forest would restore his power. With their divine weapons, Arjuna and Krishna protected the fire while it devoured everything.
The Great Battle Against Indra

As the forest burned, it disturbed Takshaka, the king of snakes, and his allies. Many creatures perished in the fire, and Takshaka’s son, Aswasena, narrowly escaped. Seeing the destruction, Varuna, the god of rain, intervened to save his friend Takshaka’s home, causing a downpour. However, Krishna and Arjuna, armed with divine weapons, held back the rains, allowing Agni to complete his task.

Agni’s Devouring Flame

The fire raged through the forest, scorching everything in its path. Animals ran in panic, some unable to escape. The ponds boiled, killing the fish and tortoises within. Despite Varuna’s repeated efforts to extinguish the flames with rain, the fire consumed the forest, leaving destruction in its wake.

A Divine Blessing

After the destruction, Arjuna felt guilty for the deaths of so many creatures and many snakes were killed and they cursed Arjuna with Sarpa Dosha. This had many ill effects on him in his Life causing him to seek nivarana from the Sarpa Dosha. He was then directed to pray to Lord Garuda to relieve him from this Sarpa Dosha.
Lord Narayana asks Garuda deva to help Arjuna clear the malefic effects of the Sarpa Dosha. Lord Garuda replies that he is not very effective or helpful without Lord Narayana or Goddess Lakshmi. Then, Lord Narayan says that he will be seated on the right of Lord Garuda and Goddess Lakshmi to his left, such that whoever seeks the blessings of Lord Garuda will also be twice blessed by them, with prosperity and abundance. This is also to be found to be stated in the Garuda Purana.

Connection to Koladevi Temple
This sacred event is believed to have taken place near the site of the Koladevi temple, where Garuda is still worshipped as the protector from Sarpadosha.

Another specialty in this temple is that there is also an idol of Lord Anjeneya Swamy. It is unique and not to be found anywhere else in the World as Lord Anjeneya is holding his Brahmastra in this hand. Also, his teeth are visible.

Garuda Temple, Kolar, is located about 17 kilometers from Mulbagal, accessible via Srinivasapura Road. Visitors need to travel a short distance off the main road, which is well-maintained. Numerous flower stalls nearby make the temple easy to find.

BENEFIT OF VISITING GARUDA TEMPLE
Dosha clearance:
Devotees believe that visiting the temple can clear doshas such as

STORY OF DEVI JWALAMUKHI (SISTER OF DEVI CHAMUNDI)

The powerful Jwalamukhi Tripurasundari Temple is the temple of the sister of Goddess Chamundeshwari. Its located at the foothills of Chamundi Hills, Mysore

TEMPLE STORY :
In the "Devi Mahatme" in the episode of the killing of asura Raktabeeja.
Raktabeejasura was not to be easily defeated as any drop of blood from his body on the ground would create a new similar Raktabeejasura thus making him invincible.

Devi Chamundi kept slaying him but more would get created.

Even as Chamundi Devi was fighting Raktabeejasura, he cunningly hid inside a Buffalo. Chamundi searched for him everywhere. Sweat covered her brows. She wiped the sweat with her hand shook it on the ground.

From this sweat drop, a female form took birth and said “I am your younger sister URIMARI. I will spread my tongue all over and drink Rakta Bheej’s blood. You fight and kill him”.
Encouraged by this, intensified her search and stared at the Buffalo.

Her burning eyes caused the Buffalo to split into 2 and the demon hiding inside came out.
Chamundi seared his head and Urimari drank all the blood. It was the end of the Demon

Chamundi was thankful to her sister URIMARI and asked her to reside at the foothills of Chamundi Hills where she is called Jwalamukhi amma.

The temple is located in beautiful surroundings

Lord Shiva becomes a Fisherman to marry Devi Parvati

Devi Parvati was deeply interested in learning about the various mysteries of the Universe and the sacred Vedas.
Lord Shiva kept postponing and one day finally gave in to her demands and decided to tell the secrets to Devi Parvati.

LORD SHIVA CURSES PARVATI :
The secrets and mysteries of the Universe and the Vedas being vast and immense, the explanation by Lord Shiva stretched from minutes to hours to days to weeks and even months !
Devi Parvati continued to listen with unfaltering attention but as the explanation started stretching from months to years, the Devi momentarily lost her focus distracted by the stunning scenery around the place.

The usually Calm Lord Shiva became highly infuriated as thousands of Devas and Yogis had requested him to share the secret and he had declined.
And here he was telling Devi Parvati the secret and she was getting distracted, the furious Lord Shiva immediately cursed "Go and born as a fisher woman so that you learn about concentration".

NANDI's Help :
Devi Parvati instantly disappeared and was born as a baby girl and found under a tree by Fisherman chief who was childless.
He brought her up as his own daughter and named her as KAYARKANNI.
She grew up to be of immense beauty even as she helped her fisherman father in fishing expeditions.

As years rolled by, Lord Shiva could not bear the separation from his beloved Devi.

Seeing his Lord dejected, Nandi said "Why dont we bring Devi Parvati back"?
Lord Shiva said "No...she is destined to marry a fisherman".

Nandi decided to help his beloved Lord and  immediately took the form of a Gaint Shark and started pestering the fisherman in the area where KayarKanni (Devi Parvati) resided.

Nandi as the Shark deliberately affected the livelihood of the fisherman by overturning their boats, tearing off their nets and creating havoc in the sea.

Efforts to catch the Shark was of no use.

Finally, KayarKanni's (Devi Parvati)'s father fed up of the torture by the Gaint Shark announced "Whoever captures the Shark, I will willingly marry off my daughter KayarKanni to that brave man".

Seeing KayarKanni's beauty, many fishermen did try to capture the Gaint Shark, but Nandi shooed them away with his Huge Power and strength.

Lord Shiva, waiting for this opportunity, immediately took the form of a fisherman and told the Chief of fisherman, "I will capture the Gaint Shark and marry your daughter".

The Gaint Shark (Nandi) seeing his beloved Lord happily allowed himself to be captured.

Lord Shiva then brought the Gaint Shark to the shores and showed his catch.

The delighed and gratedful father of KayarKanni's immediately joyfully  married off his daughter to the handsome fisherman who had captured the Gaint Shark.

Thus, the separation of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati was ended by Nandi's help and all of them returned in their true form  to Mount Kailash.

TEMPLE BEHIND THIS STORY :

SWARNAPUREESWARAR TEMPLE is the temple behind the story of Lord Shiva as fisherman marrying Devi Kayarkanni (Parvati).

Hence, it is said that those having PROBLEMS in getting MARRIED come to this temple and perform rituals on Friday for removal of Hindrances.

Generally devotees keep the invitations or documents at the feet of the Lord or Mother to seek their blessings.  In this temple, ladies bring their new jewels and offer them to the Mother.

ANOTHER STORY :
There is a slightly different version of the above legend which is also narrated in this temple.  When Daakshayani went back to Shiva, He refused to take Her back as She did not listen to His advice.  Then Muruga approached the Mother in the form of Shiva and advised Her about the need for proper understanding and harmony between the couple.  (Something similar to Swamimalai episode with the difference that here He advises the Mother instead of father).  Hence the Murugan of this kshetram appears with an Aksharamala in His hands, befitting His status as Acharya!

Other Legends

It is believed that Goddess Mahalakshmi performed penance here to marry Lord Mahavishnu. Lord Shiva of this temple bestowed his blessing on her. Hence, this place also gets the name Lakshmipuri.

This place is also called Indirapuri because Lord Indiran worshipped Lord Shiva here to get the weapon “Vajrayutham” which he needed to destroy demon Vruddhasuran.

The third name of this place is Skandapuri as Lord Murugan (also known as Skanda) worshipped Lord Shiva here to seek his blessings to destroy demon Tharakasuran.
