STORY OF MAA
KALARATRI
During the devastation created by the demons, Shumbha and Nishumbha Goddess Parvati took
the avatar of Kalaratri Devi. It is said that these two demons invaded the
Devlok, the abode of the Demi-Gods. After getting frustrated the
Demi-Gods prayed to Goddess Parvati to help them defeat the asuras. It is then
when Kalaratri avatar was created.
Another
Story :
According to
legend, Demons Shumbha-Nishumbha, and Raktabeej had created in all the 3 Worlds.
Worried by
this, all the Devas from Devlok went to Lord
Shiva
Shiva asked
the goddess Parvati to kill the demons and protect their devotees.
Parvati ji
assumed the form of Durga and killed Shumbha-Nishumbha.
But, when
she slew Rakta Beej, each blood drop from the demon’s body produced clones of
raktabeej. Seeing this, Durga Maa created DEVI MAA KALARATRI.
Kaalratri
furious at this, drank his blood to prevent it from falling down and slaughtered
Rakta Beej’s Blood Base by cutting his throat, eventually killing Raktabija.
But Maa
Kaalratri’s anger had not subsided. She
became so fierce and destructive that she started killing everyone whoever
coming in front of her. All the gods prayed in front of god shiva to stop her
so shiv decided to come below her foot trying to stop her. When she was engaged
in killing everyone, god shiva appeared below her foot. By seeing her beloved
husband below her foot, she bit her tongue(Her idols and pictures contain this
look) and helped him(God Shiva) to stand and in the guilt, she forgot about the
fight and hence god shiva calmed her down.
