Dhanteras carries a
captivating tale that sheds light on the auspicious tradition of purchasing
gold on this day. The narrative unfolds with the 16-year-old son of King Hima
and his newly wedded wife. A foretelling had forewarned that the young prince
would meet his demise on the fourth day of marriage.
In a bid to safeguard her
husband from this ominous fate, the ingenious bride strategically placed a
lavish assortment of ornaments,
including gold and silver coins, at the entrance of their sleeping chamber. To
stave off sleep and ward off the impending danger, she engaged in singing and
storytelling throughout the night.
When the God of Death,
Lord Yama, assumed the form of a serpent to claim the prince's life, he was
momentarily blinded by the radiant display of gold and silver. This luminous
obstruction prevented Lord Yama from entering the chamber. Undeterred, he ascended
the heap of wealth, where he sat enthralled by the melodies and narratives. As
dawn broke, Lord Yama silently departed without fulfilling his morbid mission.
The cleverness of the newly wedded bride thus averted the young prince's rendezvous with death, and Dhanteras was established as a celebration to commemorate this miraculous escape. Consequently, the tradition of acquiring gold or silver on this day, symbolizing 'dhan' or wealth, became a cherished practice believed to ward off evil and mortality.
