THE STORY OF DEVI
BRAHMACHARINI :
Sources : Shiv Mahapuran, Devi Mahatma, Ramcharitamanas,
Wikipedia and various other sources.
Durga Mata took birth as the daughter of Himavan, the
king of the Mountains.
She was named as Parvati. She also came to be called as
Hemavati.
Once Sage Narada visited and told Parvati about Lord
Shiva's qualities.
When Parvati how to get Lord Shiva to marry her. The sage
said that if she followed a path of severe penance, she will be able to.
Parvati resolved to marry Lord Shiva.
Her parents learn of her desire, and try to discourage
her, but she pursues what she wants and did Tapasya for about 5000 years.
In mean time Gods approached god Kamadeva - the Hindu god
of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection and asks him to generate
desire in Shiva for Parvati. They did this because of an asura named Tarkasur
who gained the boon of being killed by only Lord Shiva's child. Kama reaches
Shiva and shoots an arrow of desire
Shiva opens his third eye in his forehead and burns the
cupid Kama to ashes. Parvati does not lose her hope or her resolve to win over
Shiva. She begins to live in mountains like Shiva, engage in the same
activities as Shiva, one of asceticism, yogin and tapas - it is this aspect of
Parvati that is deemed to be that of goddess Brahmacharini.
Devi Parvati due to this severe austerity cames to be
known as TAPASCHARINI AND BRAHMACHARINI.
For several hundred years, Devi Parvati ate only fruits
and flowers. Thereafter for a 100 years, she ate only vegetables, followed by
3000 years of eating only FALLEN LEAVES.
She eventually stopped eating even that and lived on mere
Air. Thats why Brahmacharini is also called APARNA (one who lived even without
leaves).
She slept on the floor of the forest under an open sky
for years in order to successfully complete her penance.
Devi Brahmacharini became fragile and very weak. Her
mother, Maina Devi cried out in sorrow "O Maa". Hence, Devi is also
called UMA.
Her ascetic pursuit draws the attention of Shiva and
awakens his interest. He meets her in disguised form, tries to discourage her,
telling her Shiva's weaknesses and personality problems.
Parvati refuses to listen and insists in her resolve.
Shiva finally accepts her and they get married.
The essence of the story of this goddess is that the mind
should not be distracted even in the difficult struggles of life.

Srikanth Matrubai
